You might be wondering what does a picture of a electrical oven has to do with data centers? Well it help put things into perspective.

As computer equipment continues to follow Moore's law trend of miniaturization, data center equipment continue to become more and more powerful in smaller and smaller packages.  Just to put it in perspective, a commercial grade electrical double deck oven by Blodgett (1415-Double) 27" Electric Double Deck Oven has a power density of 8.2kW/m²

Here is how the power density of the Boldgett 1415-Double is calculated:

• Dimension: (H x W x D) = 42" x 27.25" x 25.63"
• Wattage: 3,750 W
• Area = 27.25" x 25.63" or 0.6985m x 0.651m = 0.455 m²
• Power Density = 3750W / 0.455m² ~ 8.2kW/m²

Data center equipment has pass the power density of a commercial oven somewhere between 2002 and 2003 according to the data by ASHRAE Datacom Equipment Power Trends and Cooling Applications 2005!  No wonder data center operators are facing cooling issues!
